Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Social media has become an essential tool in disaster management and emergency response coordination, offering real-time information, facilitating communication, and enhancing community engagement. In Karu Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, where natural disasters, such as floods and storms, are common, social media has proven to be an effective tool for disseminating information and coordinating relief efforts. Social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp allow authorities, volunteers, and affected individuals to share crucial updates, request assistance, and coordinate actions during emergencies (Gambo & Usman, 2024). This study examines the role of social media in emergency response coordination, focusing on its impact on the efficiency, communication, and collaboration between different stakeholders in Karu during times of crisis.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While social media has the potential to improve emergency response efforts, its use in disaster situations is often hindered by misinformation, uncoordinated messaging, and limited digital literacy among local populations. In Karu, the challenge is further compounded by poor infrastructure, with some areas lacking internet connectivity or access to modern digital devices. Although social media has been used to spread awareness and coordinate emergency responses, there is insufficient research on how effectively it contributes to the overall response efforts in the region. This study seeks to assess the impact of social media on emergency response coordination in Karu, identifying both the advantages and limitations (Ibrahim & Mohammed, 2025).
